Your grip is usually the weakest link when it comes to club and mace training and the thicker the handle the more challenging it is for the grip.
If your goal is to load up heavy on the upper body, then a thinner handle will make that easier.
But, if you want a stronger grip… then you might want to use a thicker handle.
Personally though, I try to use both… here’s why:
If your grip is always your weakest link when swinging heavy, the only way you’ll be able to swing heavier weights is to strengthen your grip… and one of the best ways to do that is by using a thicker handle.
So, by using a thicker handle you’ll be able to swing heavier when using a thinner handle.
In powerlifting, it’s called accessory work where you target smaller muscles, like the triceps, shoulders, or upper back, to help improve performance in the main lifts, such as the bench press. Accessory work helps address weaknesses, build muscle, and support the larger compound movements.
And it’s exactly the same when swinging heavy clubs and maces. By developing your gripping power by targeting the smaller muscles of the forearm then you strengthen your weakest link and improve your overall performance especially when using a thinner handle.
Our Dangerously Fit steel clubs and steel maces have 1.4” (35mm) grip which is considered standard, as do our Maverick Clubs.
But, our Maverick Mace has a slightly wider grip of 1.6” (40mm) making it ideal for building grip strength training…. Plus it’s adjustable from 8lb (3.5kg) all the way up to 80lb (36kg) so you can really load up heavy.
So, if you want a thicker grip consider our Maverick Mace otherwise our steel clubs, steel maces and Maverick Clubs use a standard thickness handle.
