Personal trainer, Chris Powell had made quite a name for himself. He’s known to work on extremely obese people to help them lose weight and live healthier lives through the show, Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition.
Most of these popular celebrity trainers have a set of fitness principles that they live by. In the case of Chris Powell, he goes by the tried and tested F.I.T.T. principles on fitness and weight loss with all of his clients.
F.I.T.T. stands for Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type
F is for Frequency.
The frequency of times that you work out will directly affect your weight loss. Some people do more cardio on their workout days while others concentrate more on their strength training. It really depends on your needs.
For instance, you may have to do your workouts six times a week to achieve more weight loss within time expectations.
I stands for Intensity.
Intensity is the level of work you put on your exercises.
You may have heard this before – the body adjusts to the workouts it does everyday. This means that when a person does the same exercise over and over again, the body stops losing weight or shaping up. It’s what fitness experts are calling “fitness plateaus”.
To be able to overcome a fitness plateau, an increase in the intensity of your workouts is necessary. Spontaneity in physical activities helps keep the calories burning.
T means Time.
This refers to the length of time that you do your workouts. For some days, you can do the 9-minute workout with the Powells on youtube, while on other days, you can do a serious 20-minute cardio exercise like running around the park.
The final T would mean the Type of exercises that you’ve taken on.
For some, a set of different cardio routines will do; while for others, weight lifting with high intensity circuit exercises does the trick. Chris Powell recommends other forms of workouts such as swimming, biking and hiking on other days to keep the workouts fresh and motivating.

By keeping to the F.I.T.T. principle, you will be able to maintain the effectiveness of your fitness program; knowing when to adjust on the intensity or length of time as needed.
The adjustments don’t need to be big; you just need to remember Personal Trainer Chris Powell’s mantra, “a little of this, a little of that” which is practically his perspective on many other things about fitness, including diet.
