WHAT SIZE STEEL MACE SHOULD I BUY?
If you’ve never trained with a leveraged tool like the mace and club, they can feel a little awkward to start with.
The further away you grip a weight from the centre of mass the heavier it feels, therefore a 4kg steel mace feels much heavier than a 4kg kettlebell or 4kg dumbbell.
Holding the mace handle closer to the mace head is known as ‘choking up’. Choking up decreases the leverage thus making the mace feel lighter and the exercise easier.
When starting out begin with a light weight to master the movement, then increase the weight once you can control, stabilise & move the steel mace dynamically.

WHAT IS A STEEL MACE?
The Great Gama (pictured) of then British India was the first athlete to popularise the mace. In his European tour of 1910 the Great Gama defeated many of the top wrestlers of the time, and many of the other best wrestlers of the day simply refused to fight him.
For the next 30-years he beat everyone he fought before retiring in 1952 undefeated. The mace was one of the Great Gama’s secret training tools and in 1922 he was presented with a Silver Mace by the Prince of Wales.
The macebell, also known as the Gada in India, is still widely used by the Pehlwani wrestlers for physical training in the wresting gyms (Akhara).
The Pehlwani wrestlers make the Gada from a bamboo stick set in concrete and Gada swinging competitions are widely held in India to this day.
THE HISTORY OF THE MACE
ANCIENT WAR WEAPON
The mace is over 1000 years old and has been used as a fighting weapon in many cultures.
From the Hindu and Persian warriors of the 13th century to skilled European fighters using such weapons as the pole axe.
The mace is an ancient weapon that has been used with devastating effect.
It’s also one of the very first strength and conditioning tools as warriors would train with heavy maces to develop strength and power for battle.

STEEL MACE EXERCISES
Traditional steel mace exercises like the steel mace 10-to-2 and 360 are great exercises for building bullet proof shoulders, a strong core and powerful grip.
However, the mace isn’t limited to upper body strength. It’s an incredibly versatile tool that can be used to challenge the entire body.
The versatility of the mace lends itself perfectly to ‘steel mace flow’ workouts where combinations of 3 or more exercises are performed in a logical sequence one after another without rest.
