Bruce Lee

Growing up in the 80’s we used to watch home movies on video cassette.

Back then you had two options, Betamax or VHS.

VHS was for the cool kids. The video players looked cool and go to any video store and there were thousands of titles to choose from. We had the other one… Betamax.

Betamax didn’t look cool, it was a big black box, it didn’t have a remote and there were few videos available (that’s the way I remember it anyway).

Most of the videos we had were taped Xmas specials. You’d have to fast forward through the ad breaks which was especially annoying without a remote.

Ah… the good old days.

Anyways, our video library consisted of 4 videos;

  1. Raiders Of The Lost Arc
  2. Silence Of The Lambs
  3. Pretty Women (my mums)
  4. And… Bruce Lee’s – Enter The Dragon

With so few options I watched Enter The Dragon 40+ times.

Which got me thinking about Bruce Lee, his famous philosophies and how this relates to fitness.

Here are some of my favourites…

1 .I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.

This is like the person that wants to get in shape and goes for a 10km run on day 1… then can’t walk for 5 days so gives up trying. Consistency is key, do a little bit everyday.

  1. If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is what life is made up of.

If you’re not happy with the way you look and feel, do something about it today. Don’t put off till ‘next week’ what you can start now, next week will never come.

  1. If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.

If you want to get in shape, stop procrastinating. Decide, commit, succeed and repeat.

  1. Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.

We all go through challenges every now and then… that’s life. Sitting at home on the couch munching on Doritos and watching Netflix specials isn’t gonna help. Lace up your runners, get outside and go for a run… you’ll be amazed at how good you’ll feel when you start moving your body.

  1. As you think, so shall you become.

Without sounding to woo woo… you need to develop a positive mindset, imagine looking how you want to look, feeling the way you want to feel and having the energy you want to have.

  1. Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.

There are so many fitness fads and new diets that come and go. Stick to the basic principles of clean eating and regular exercise and you will get results.

  1. Don’t fear failure. — Not failure, but low aim, is the crime. In great attempts it is glorious even to fail.

Don’t be afraid to try something new or to have big goals. Want to run a Marathon? Start with a small goal like running for 5-mins without stopping, and then set a new goal once you reach it. Keep setting new small goals until you reach your ultimate big goal.
